Since 1915, Münster has officially held the status of a major city, even though the 400,000 to 500,000 bicycles contrast with only 179,066 motor vehicles (2024). The people of Münster not only cycle to work, they are also industrious: of 208,700 employed persons (2013), around 85 per cent work in the service sector and 15 per cent in manufacturing, with only 18,169 unemployed. This places Münster below the national average of 6.6 per cent (2015).
Nevertheless, there are also work-shy individuals in Münster who prefer to earn their daily bread through illegal activities rather than honest work – theft, embezzlement, espionage, breach of confidentiality and so forth. The investigators of Kurtz Corporate Detective Agency Münster conduct legally compliant and discreet investigations: +49 251 7009 0014.
As early as 1724, construction began in Münster on a canal. The so-called Münstersche Kanal was intended to reach the Dutch waterway network and the North Sea, but it was only completed as far as Clemenshafen (Neuenkirchen) and later as far as Maxhafen (Wettringen). This canal remained in operation until 1840. Due to its declining importance, large parts of the inland harbour in Münster have been closed down, and in 2010 it was visited by only 71 cargo ships.
Münster is also crossed by the Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK) between the North Sea port of Emden and its terminus in the large inland harbour of Dortmund. The canal runs through the city over a length of 26 kilometres. In addition to the airport, today’s transport connections consist primarily of the motorways 1 and 43 as well as the connecting B51 and B219, which link Münster with the Münsterland and the Ruhr region.
Münster has long attracted attention through its educational and administrative institutions, including the university, the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe and the district government. Noteworthy companies include BASF Coatings GmbH, the coatings division of BASF, which employs around 2,300 people in the Hiltrup district, Brillux paints and coatings, as well as Westfalen AG, a petrol station chain operator and leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas in Germany (2013).
The financial services sector in Münster is even more significantly developed. The city serves, among others, as the headquarters of the Provinzial insurance group, LVM, Sparkasse Münsterland, Sparda-Bank Münster, Westdeutsche Immobilienbank and NRW.Bank (alongside Düsseldorf). In addition, Westdeutsche Lotterie and the Sparkassenverband Westfalen-Lippe are based in Münster. Furthermore, with nearly 30 call centres, Münster is the largest location for telephone marketing and surveys in North Rhine-Westphalia. Moreover, the headquarters of The Phone House, a telecommunications service provider with more than 1,000 employees (2013), is located in Münster.
